Great news for future drivers and busy families across Texas! As of 2025, a new state law has officially reduced the required classroom instruction hours for teen driver education—from 32 hours down to 24 hours.
What Changed?
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) announced this change to streamline the driver education process while maintaining road safety as a top priority. Teens can now complete their classroom instruction faster—without missing out on any of the core lessons they need to become safe, confident drivers.
- Old Requirement: 32 Hours of Classroom Time
- New Requirement: 24 Hours of Classroom Time
That’s 8 fewer hours in class—meaning more time for behind-the-wheel training, schoolwork, sports, and other responsibilities.
Who Does This Apply To?
This update applies to all Texas teens enrolled in a state-approved driver education course, whether it’s in-person, online, or through a parent-taught program.
